EAST DULWICH MURAL

The East Dulwich Railway Mural was initiated in April 2018 by Love ED, a group of East Dulwich residents and businesses as part of Southwark Council’s High Street Challenge and Cleaner Greener Safer initiative, with permission from Network Rail.

Alphabetics Anonymous teamed up with

Blue Shop Cottage to apply for the project, and the East Dulwich community were invited to vote for their favoured applicant for the mural. Achieving over 50% of votes, Alphabetics Anonymous and Blue Shop Cottage were delighted to be chosen to take on the project. With a completely open brief, Alphabetics Anonymous directly approached the East Dulwich locals to help lead the design process, and named the project “Our Words On Our Walls”. A questionnaire was designed by the team, and dispatched to a cross section of local residents and businesses, helping inform the messaging and design of the mural, and ensuring the piece communicated and expressed the identity of East Dulwich through the locals’ thoughts on what connects them within their area.

The mural was managed and designed by

Jake Tyler and Hana Sunny Whaler of Alphabetics Anonymous, and painted with the assistance of fellow Alphabetics members.

For further information on the design and painting of this project, see our process video, shot and edited by Jimmy Taylor.
